What do you say about the third book in possibly one of the most original, addictive and exceptionally written series being published?I will try to limit my use of superlatives but my first thought was that Written in Red was one of the best books in many years, Murder of Crows while being a 5 Star reading experience was missing that elusive “I can’t put this book down” quality. Vision in Silver has recaptured that feeling that I had while reading Written in Red.Seldom do many books live up to their own hype; this one did and surpassed it. You may notice I am not giving a lot of examples because almost anything I can say about this book could be a spoiler other than Meg becomes more a part of the Lakeside Courtyard and is considered by them to be more than human and almost terra indigene. The fact is that any action against Meg would be considered an attack on The Others which is another comforting thought in this world. We do get to know more about the world in general and it is amazing just to consider the things that are fact in this world that would be mythology in almost any other novel you ever read.Good things happen, bad things happen and you find out more about what The Others consider important and you keep wondering how the humans on this planet get so stupid at times. You should never forget that The Others still are the predominate predators not to mention pretty much the owners of this world, the humans keep forgetting that bit of intelligence.A note: You will love the very last page :)Bottom Line: This is going to be one of the Top 5 Urban Fantasy novels of 2015, it is just too good for me to describe without sounding like a slobbering fan and not a reviewer. To use an old cliché, if you only get one book this year, this is that book!

Let it be known that this series is peerless; Anne Bishop’s world-building is innovative, her characters are exceptional, and the story is obsession inducing. I picked-up WRITTEN IN RED on a whim in 2013, and was wowed beyond measure. My fixation with all things THE OTHERS is so profound that it should be a bona fide medical condition. No joke! I listened to the previous two installments, so I did have some concerns that switching to hard copy might diminish my enjoyment of VISION IN SILVER, but that clearly didn’t happen because for the third time in a row 5-stars just isn’t enough. In this book we learn a lot more about the cassandra sangue, gain perspective on Simon Wolfgard, and get a glimpse of the terra indigene that live beyond the courtyards. The blood prophets were the main plot focal point; free of their keepers, these girls are ill-equipped for life outside the compounds, and now it’s up to Meg to set them on the correct path. She and the other members of her human pack are attempting to write a sweet blood 101 guide of sorts. Little is known about the cassandra sangue, so a lot of it came down to trial & error with Corbyn as the lab rat. I liked how the author approached this aspect of the story, the progression was gradual, and each new discovery felt as though it could be the key to their very survival. Meg’s triumphs became mine, and her setbacks were absolutely devastating. Most were small things, but when experienced from such an innocent POV as this series’ protagonist, they became monumental. Most stories that feature shifters put emphasis on the humanness of the characters while as Bishop does the total opposite. Her various gards don people flesh out of necessity, but it’s evident that they prefer fur, and view mankind as ‘clever meat.’ This is part of what makes THE OTHERS universe so original because misunderstandings between the two species occur frequently from common expressions being taken literally to every day gestures being grossly misinterpreted. I enjoyed gaining perspective on how the terra indigene see the world through Simon because he’s the most progressive leader among them which makes his outlook fabulously unique. He’s tasked with a huge decision at the end of this novel, and the outcome could be… scary. This leads me to this book’s second main plot thread. Tension between THE OTHERS and humans has reached a boiling point, the Humans First and Last movement is gaining momentum and people are being forced to choose a side. You’re either a Wolf lover or a delusional HFL supporter who believes that mankind actually has a chance at being the dominant species. Bishop has succeeded in making me hate my own kind by illustrating the barbaric nature of Thaisia’s citizens, and highlighting the underlying prejudice that exists in all societies. The author makes it impossible not to cheer for the terra indigene, and eagerly anticipate the fast approaching day of reckoning when the wild country finally shows its teeth, and establishes once and for all who’s predator and who’s prey. There’s only one cure for a VISION IN SILVER book hangover, and it’s more Meg & Simon!

But I just can't--maybe because I loved the Black Jewels so much. With the exception of Tangled Webs (a weak effort), those books and that world were so complex, so compelling, and so endlessly expanding in narrative possibility. These books just aren't even close. They do try to mimic the structure of the Black Jewels series--powerful females who are easily damaged, protective males who are even more powerful in their own right, a virtually omnipotent race (or in this case, races) of creatures who can easily overcome anything mere (ungifted) humans can dish out. There's a fundamental conservatism to these stories--sort of a nineteenth-century sensibility, one might say--in that the powerful rulers of lesser folks really do know better, and for the most part use their powers for good. In the BJ books, the evil Blood were defeated by the good Blood, and landen humans (people like us) were mostly irrelevant. Here, there are only a handful of decent humans, and the rest of them are greedy, petty, violent, and totally devoid of morals. Okay. I can accept that as a premise, if the world of the "better creatures" is truly interesting. It just isn't. The cassandra sangue (kind of an obvious name, really--couldn't she have called them something more exotic?) are vulnerable and kind of damaged girls (not women, really, at any age--the books present this as a good thing, but it's a bit disturbing) who need to protection of inhuman Master Races in order to defend themselves against Bad Humans. Of which there are many. That's the whole premise, basically. These Master Races are (mostly, but not completely) shapeshifters and vampires. Both of which have been overdone to death in paranormal fiction. They are mystified and enraged (by turns) with humans, and only seem to like the cassandras, because they are Special too. Oh, and "childlike." Every plot so far is basically the same--humans try to mess with the Others (Master Races), or the cassandras, and get swatted down. Hard. Because humans are dumb, and always forget what happened in the last book. *Sigh* The Black Jewels books were so much more than this! Moral quandaries, broken hierarchies, gender slipperiness, genuine dangers that made you hold on to your seat with regularity. I know it's mean to judge a new series by an old one, but I think I would find this one unexciting even had I not read the Jewels series. I like Bishop, and I guess I will try one more book, but I really can't get excited about them. I put this one down for months before picking it up again and giving it another go. My recommendation: if you're not sick to death of vampires and shapeshifters, if you don't mind adult women who are praised for remaining girls forever, and who are so vulnerable that every time they appear on the page, you think they might fall apart in some new way, give this series a try. Others seem to have liked it. But if you loved the Black Jewels, don't expect anything even near that caliber.
