Very insightful!

Jill Gambaro takes us down the RSI rabbit hole to a strange land filled with cruelinsurance companies, vanishing attorneys, and domineering doctors. In thismillennium, because of our excessive screen use, her personal struggle, health discoveries, and political insight should be required reading, especiallyfor Congress. In the end, she manages to finds friends, and some hope, for those with this insidious, misunderstood disease who are some of the hardest working workers in the world.Thank you Jill!

Years ago I worked with a woman who was an amazing statistical typist. For 8+ hours a day, she’d hunch over thick print-outs that came from California’s border stations and ports, perform complex tabulations, and enter all of the data into a dozen single-spaced columns. It was a job that no one else in the clerical pool wanted but she’d happily type away without a care in the world. One day, however, she started complaining that her hands and wrists were hurting. Her typing began to noticeably slow down, coupled with frequent breaks that peeved her co-workers. Several of them went so far as to say that she was becoming lazy and just trying to get out of work. For all intents and purposes, she looked perfectly fine on the outside and it was essentially her word against anyone else’s that she was in excruciating pain from the repetitive motion tasks she was performing. Unfortunately, this was during a time when not as much was known about carpal tunnel syndrome. Her own doctor – unsure of what caused it, much less how to treat it – prescribed a succession of meds to try to alleviate the twinges and soreness but essentially concluded that it was “all in her head” and would eventually go away by itself.Such is the cruelty of the leading occupational illness in America and the most common of physical disabilities in the world. In her new book, “The Truth About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; Finding Answers, Getting Well,” author, speaker and accomplished screenwriter Jill Gambaro not only knows from personal experience that carpal tunnel symptoms should NOT be ignored but has also provided legal, legislative, medical, workers’ comp, and psychological insights on how to keep these symptoms from impacting your quality of life and sense of self-esteem. For anyone whose hands, wrists and arms are truly their livelihood – and this includes clerical workers, hairdressers, musicians, and assembly line workers – this definitive text could truly be a lifesaver. In addition to addressing crucial issues such as how to “listen” to your pain, communicate effectively with your physician, and implement ergonomic improvements in the workplace, Gambaro has a comprehensive bibliography and set of appendices for readers to further educate themselves. I was also pleased to see that she didn’t leave out the next generation of potential repetitive strain injury (RSI) patients; specifically, teenagers that are practically born with cell phones, iPads, keyboards and the latest high-tech games.

This book is 25 years overdue, since that is how long ago I too suffered RSI. Like the author, I too, worked non-stop on a CRT at a law firm. At the time, a pompous orthopedist scoffed at the notion that my pain travels from my wrists to my palms & elbows. To quote him "I have patients with REAL problems, in wheelchairs, yada yada. What do you want from me?"Some tips which I learned by now, and which Jill doesn't mention, are:(1) EMFs and UV and chemicals of computers, and outgassing electronics, aggravate the situation by heating and electrifying the body, thus sparking the nerves and steadily eroding them. Not to mention quickened heart rate, speeded metabolism, triggering of UTI and worse.I've developed Tarsal Tunnel syndrome in my foot, and computer EMFs cause shooting sparks to radiate into that neuropathic foot (not the other foot).Try to imagine the soft tissue of your arch feeling sensitive as your eyeballs. OUCH! That's what I'm dealing with.(2) RSI/carpal-tunnel victims ought to band together with electrosensitives, fibromyalgics, Lyme-victims, Kundalini victims, Electromyogram-EMG-victims, mercury-toxified-victims, and MS-victims, rather than allowing ourselves to be overly categorized. Because there's too much symptomatic overlap.(3) To those of us whose anatomies became "electrified" - beware of invasive procedures, such as EMG, massage & acupuncture. Sensitives like us can too easily get irreversible damage from such procedures. Also avoid Kundalini.(4) Also, if your neuropathy feels "electrified" such as "shooting sparks & tingling", avoid high sodium foods, sharp food & spices, processed foods, Wasabi/horseradish, excessive chocolate, and high-fat-dairy.Low-fat-Lysine foods are calming, as are "grounding-earthy" foods such as soda-crackers, yams, veggies. Also great are dark sweet-berries/cherries, yellow oils, probiotic yogurt, mayo.I've an open Q still remaining:Many have been helped by Far InfraRed, or else by marijuana or stem cells. So can those work for us?I've recently undergone 2 sessions with Cold Laser, to no avail.Might Far InfraRed be risky insofar as further electrifying us?If so, then perhaps COMBINING IT with grounded, suctioning mud could help prevent electrification by dint of its Negative polarity?

This book should be under fiction. I began having symptoms of carpel tunnel, was promptly diagnosed and treated within a month. I have had very knowledgeable physicians, BCBS was very helpful and my recovery was text book. I also work in the medical field and have never head of anyone having the problems this author is trying to portray. I know many, many people who live full lives with great careers with RSI. There is treatment. Why would the doctors not want to treat an illness? That's ridiculous! Its books like this that scare normal, working class people from seeking the help they need. I found myself asking " why didn't she go someplace else". Maybe the reason she didn't qualify for workers comp was that she hadn't worked enough. Maybe all the time she took off to travel worked against here. I'm sure her Medicaid still covered treatment options. Disappointing.

I found the chapters on how an RSI is diagnosed and treated the key elements to provided hope to patients .The book is an inspiration for each patient to manage their pain.Ms. Gambaro's book is a must read for Physicians and Patients who treat and have been affected by RSI's.
