The Third Bank of the River: Power and Survival in the Twenty-First-Century Amazon, by Chris Feliciano Arnold

Review

"A valuable addition to contemporary reportage out of Brazil, which has understandably been dominated by the country's tumultuous politics, systemic corruption and rising middle class.... Arnold's account of the threats to indigenous communities―informed by a comprehensive and accessible litany of the abuses they have endured since colonial times―is the highlight of the book.”―Ernesto Londono, The New York Times Book Review“Arnold has crafted a thrilling page-turner while delving into topics that often bypass Brazil’s mainstream media...The Third Bank of the River ultimately stands out as an important book for Americans looking to better understand the glorious and troubled nation to their south ― in all its complexity."―Bruno Garcez, San Francisco Chronicle"The Third Bank of the River chronicles [Arnold's] three-year effort to understand the Amazon as it exists today. Through exhaustive research and firsthand reporting, he reveals how drug lords, loggers, politicians, and tribe leaders have shaped the region, weaving together stories hundreds of years old and others he watched unfold, and explores the myriad of issues facing the people who live there."―J.R. Sullivan, Men’s Journal "A wide-ranging panorama of this vast region in western Brazil, so full of both promise and suffering...Astonishing."―BookPage "[A] journalistic account of the rush to develop the Amazon rainforest and its cost in human lives...[Arnold] draws much-needed attention to crime without punishment in a remote―but not invisible―part of the world."―Kirkus Reviews “Arnold pulls few punches in this sobering account of the unfolding genocidal threat, adding another dark layer to the urgent story environmentalists are already telling about how the logging of rain forests is playing a drastically destructive role in climate change.”―Booklist "Arnold handles all of the narrative strands expertly and shows a keen eye for detail...The reader leaves with a newfound understanding of the diversity, complexity, and corruption to be found in the modern Amazon."―Publishers Weekly "The Third Bank of the River is an enlightening narrative that will forever change your perception of the Amazon as an idyllic oasis."―Shelf Awareness (starred review)“A vital passionate chronicle of life and death in the world’s last Wild West.”―Jon Lee Anderson, author The Lion's Grave and Guerrillas "With The Third Bank of the River, Chris Arnold brings us valuable insights into the forces conspiring to devastate the Amazon and the valiant struggle of those seeking to impose the law in a land where the rule of the gun prevails. A real page-turner."―Scott Wallace, author of The Unconquered: In Search of the Amazon's Last Uncontacted Tribes

As a Luso-American, I always felt a connection to Brazil. (Sorry about the World Cup, but I was cheering you on.) They felt like cousins in a way. We shared the same language and history. This book made me realize how little I knew about this one-time Portuguese colony.Chris weaves together an impressive array of facts with his own personal narrative. He helps you experience his travels through this massive and amazing country, but also makes you understand the political, historical, religious and social conflicts that make it such a unique and amazing place. So, whether you read it for the personal journey, for the criminal story (with its "Godfather"-like litany of deaths in one chapter), or to just learn about the Amazon River, the native people or the politics, it's a great read that combines fact with a man's journey to discover the country of his birth. It's a good summer read or a great addition to a course.

I read a mixture of non-fiction and fiction because the two typically serve different purposes. The non-ficiton is for edification and the fiction is to engage me and carry me along in a story. This book, however, was one of those rare texts that served both purposes at the same time. The book is a blend of personal narrative, deep history, and recent history that keeps the chronicle fresh and entices the reader to turn the pages.Rather than a deep dive into any one part of the story of the Brazilian Amazon, the book paints a picture of a complex region with a complicated interplay between different players as varied as un-contacted indigenous tribes and drug traffickers. Rather than seeming scattered by trying to tell too many stories, Arnold ties these threads together to show the intersection of many people with many priorities, including his own personal story. At times, reading this book felt like watching HBO's "The Wire" not because of the drug-traffickers and the police (complete with wire tapping!) but because of the engaging way in which many different storylines all come together to tell a single complex story. One of the best books I've read this year!

I so enjoyed this book! It’s not only a vivid and urgent history of Brazil and it’s progress into the 21st century, but it’s told with a voice at once intimate and searching, which made this reader feel the author’s lived and carefully researched experience. This is story of homecoming wherein the author understands completely the luck that afforded him the opportunity to tell this story in the first place. But his personal story never overshadows the sweeping story of the Brazilian Amazon and the diverse peoples of this country and the many conflicts that have shaped it as the nation we know today. The grace with which Feliciano Arnold tells this story makes me feel the pulse of history as it beats in the wild heart of its jungles and it’s contentious expansion of its cities. Highly recommend this read!

I'm really enjoying Chris's ability to use brief historical elaborations to color and bring meaning to current predicaments facing Brazil's people. Its a difficult book to put down and I've almost missed my bus stop twice now because of it. A couple days into it I ordered a second copy for my dad because I knew he'd like it too.

Wow! I learned so much reading this book. While it was deeply informative about Brazil, it moved quickly (at the pace of, say, the largest river in the world), despite some discussion of the most boring sport in the world (soccer).

I am so glad I got this book. Went straight through it. It’s a fantastic read about Brazil and keeps you going for more. I have traveled a bit in Argentina and Peru but never Brazil. This was wonderful view of the country. Thank you for writing it and a thank you to your parents for their encouragement.

This is a well written, deeply researched and emotionally charged read, that holds interest from page one. At times written in the first person, at other times written with a journalistic eye, the pages turn quickly.

A well-written survey of modern Brazil. The book raised interesting points about whether untouched tribes should be contacted and economic development/environmentalism in the rainforest.
