I'm a longtime fan of Sanjay Patel (I'm a proud owner of his "Burning Lanka" print and two t-shirts I've jealously stopped wearing, in order to preserve them, from his Ghee Happy line). I remember reading about "The Little Book of Hindu Deities" in the SF Chronicle when it was published in 2006, and thinking, wow, that is so cool ... like, the next generation of the "Amar Chitra Katha" comic books I grew up!Now, 10+ years later, I have several tiny nieces and nephews ... and this seems like a great book to gift them. I've been waiting till the tots reach at least age 4/5, just so they don't immediately tear the pages, and are old enough to begin appreciating the artwork, and start to understand the stories. I've purchased two so far, and am probably going to buy a few more over the next couple of years. None of the recipients are going to grow up with the same frequent temple-going experience I had, so I think this is a really cool and lovely way to familiarize them with Hindu mythology stories, while also highlighting a successful Indian-American artist. I love the fresh way of looking at the age-old stories and characters. - AM SIL

My sister and her husband-to-be found this book at an exorbitant price in Indonesia,and they bought it so he can learn about Hindu in Bali. I then purchased and gave this book to my boyfriend as a good luck charm when he had to live abroad, and as a reminder to stay true to what we believe. Just recently bought another one as an anniversary gift for my husband who is learning Hinduism. Yes, it's THAT amazing in my opinion. Easy to read but still pretty detailed with cute illustrations, I encouraged every household to have this book in their library. Even if you are not into Hinduism it is still awesome. And buy a pre-loved (read: used) book if you can, please. Give those books a second chance :-)

Sanjay presents the unofficial biographies of the deities that he grew up with. It's truly fab. My niece is 6 and we are teaching her about religions of the World, specifically India, and it's very "non-threatening" or as Sanjay put it "Hello Kitty meets Hindu Iconography".

Wow! This book is awesome. Dare I say godsend!Our kids were born and raised here in the US and this book lays out all the important details of Hinduism in their language. They love this book and have learnt so much about Hinduism within 2 weeks of buying this book.The pictures are beautiful and the writing is interesting and fun. They love reading this book.

I teach world religions to ninth graders at a Catholic girls' prep school, and my students adore this book. It contains cute, colorful, cartoon-like pictures of Hindu deities, with a page of text about each. The artist/author works for Pixar Animation Studios. The text is lighthearted and includes some bits of humor that make me and my students groan and roll our eyes, but that's fun too, and the basic information about the deities is all there.The book includes all the gods and goddesses I teach my students about (Brahma, Vishnu, Rama, Krishna, Shiva, Shiva Nataraja, Sarasvati, Lakshmi, Sita, Parvati, Durga, Kali, Ganga, Hanuman, and Ganesha) plus lots more, and also one-page summaries of the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Ramayana.To show the students more traditional images of the deities, I use the Gods and Goddesses Card Deck, a Hindu Gods & Goddesses Wall Calendar (I have the one from 2008), and Hindu Altars: A Pop-Up Gallery. I also read my students the story of How Ganesh Got His Elephant Head.

We loved his take on the Ramayana so much we had to get this and it's been a treat. My six year old loves the witty descriptions. I grew up in an intensely multicultural society, and I love the idea of exposing my children to the facets of other religions and cultures. One of our faves. We've also run through three copies of Ramayana: Divine Loophole because we've read it so many times, practically until the covers fell off. So get that stat if you don't have it!!!!

This book is so amazing for little ones and for parents looking to teach Hinduism to their kids. It's a fun and colorful way to engage children in understanding Indian culture. I love the illustrations and while the stories are a little too complicated to read to my toddler, I know this will be a great resource when he's older. We own Ganesha's Sweet Tooth too and wish there were more books like these!

What a wonderful primer for newcomers to the rich and glorious world of Hindu mythology. Mr. Patel's drawings, while seemingly childlike, do not shy away from the essence of the deity pictured, i.e., Kali's necklace of severed limbs. I've been a student of myth all of my life starting (surprisingly) in Catholic grade school. Greek, Norse, Grimm's Fairy Tales, American Indian (Badger, Coyote, etc.). To paraphrase an old proverb, "When the reader is ready, the book will appear." I hope you are all ready for this modern guide to monkey-kings, flying elephants, and proud princesses.
