From Publishers Weekly
According to Kay, "Jewish women today who are seeking a precedent for womenÂ’s prayer need look no further" than the "seyder thkines," or Yiddish prayer books for women that were popular in the mid- to late 17th century. Now largely forgotten, these works of popular piety emerged in a time of remarkable messianic expectation and fervent holiness. Kay, who began researching these prayer books for her doctoral dissertation, writes that the prayer books flourished for approximately three generations and had no precedents in the history of Jewish prayer, since they were vernacular prayers written by and for women. Kay traces the development of the cottage industry of these prayer books, which proved to be financially profitable for printers and spiritually beneficial for women, who did not participate in many of the male-oriented rituals in the synagogue. Particularly interesting is a prayer book written specifically for an unnamed pregnant woman, who is encouraged to repent of her sins and be ever-ready for a possible departure from this world. One prayer explicitly beseeches God for an easy labor and a safe delivery. Kay does readers a great service by collecting these historic prayers into this volume and providing helpful commentary.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. "Devra Kay is brilliant! . . . Highly recommended."—Library Journal (Library Journal)"This gem of a book deals with a 'forgotten' volume of tkhines from the 17th century . . . . A work of impeccable scholarship, it is even accessible to those with little knowledge in this area . . . . This book is a major contribution to the literature."—Jewish Book World (Jewish Book World)"A fascinating examination of the work . . . . The 17th Century was a violent time also. Disease was a real menace across Europe. Wars were almost incessant. Governments were shaken. For the Jewish communities it was even worse. Pogroms murdered and pillaged them in Eastern Europe. In the midst of that time book publishing was flourishing, Female writers and also publishers were busy. They were putting forth books of prayer in Yiddish; for women were not supposed to learn Hebrew. Seyder Tikhines is one of these, bringing light to women's spiritual daily life. Women also were writing books to help one another live a full and good life. Jewish Publication Society has done a good service in bringing these out now.
This book is a treasure.
This is a beautifully written book with so much insight into the times that it was written. The prayers are about women for women.and are beautiful in their simplicity. If you are interested in history culture and times of Jewish women, and want a prayer book that although was written for the 16th century Jewish woman, This is an excellent book for our time as well. Devra Kay is knowledgeable and has done an excellent job of putting together this wonderful volume. My wife loves this book!
I thought the original tkhines in Yiddish would be in the book too, but it's only in English. Would be great if they had a website with links to the texts in Yiddish.
Il prodotto è arrivato velocemente e le condizioni sono buone. Grazie per l'invio, sono contenta di averlo ricevuto. A presto
Book was in excellent condition, even better than the advertisement described, and at a reasonable price. A great addition to my library/
This is a phenomenal book, written by an extremely knowledgeable woman. Her command of history and language is outstanding! Each chapter has it's own footnotes. The translated prayers are incredible, an asset to every Jewish woman.
Despite a degree in Hebrew and Jewish Studies, I must confess I knew nothing about the "Seyder Tkhines" - mystical, passionate prayers written in Yiddish by women for women as long ago as the seventeenth century. Indeed, I was not aware that such a bounteous number of widely used prayers, for women only, ever existed in Jewish history. These (tragically) long-forgotten Tkhines are the subject of Devra Kay's fascinating book. I can't believe this section of Jewish social history has been so neglected - perhaps a reflection of the patriarchal nature of modern Judaism. It's interesting to note Kay's unearthing of these prayers coinciding with the new surge of interest in Jewish mysticism - Kaballah. I'm sure Madonna and Britney would find Kay's book as intriguing as I did!Through the "Seder Tkhines", Kay gives us new insights into a turbulent time in European Jewish History. Both erudite and accessible, Kay's book is a revelation. Just one request for Devra Kay - could we now have a collection of the original Tkhines, complete with tranlations, in time for my wife's Chanukah present this year?!
